80 turn out for Lites

- No sooner was the ground officially broken, and the work on
a $32 million housing development was under way Tuesday afternoon
in Pentwater.
Approximately 80 people, including government, business and
community representatives, joined the Lites family and project
team to official kick-off the 30 acre development off Clymer
Street.
After the ceremonies, Ken Adams Excavating was at work on the
property, which has been the Georgia and Ken Lites home since
1951. They have turned the property over to the children for
the project, Mrs. Lites said, and she will enjoy watching the
progress. Mr. Lites owned and operated the landmark Lites Drugs
downtown Pentwater for many years. Since he didn't retire from
the store until several years ago, when he was 72, it is time
for the couple to enjoy life and have fun and let the children
run with the project, Mrs. Lites said. She said she and her
husband always had an idea of housing in the area, although,
"It isn't what I had originally planned," she said,
"we had thought we would sell lots."
The Cottages at Lites' Woods will include 130 dwellings, including
50 single detached condominium units and 40 duplex units.
Family members include Mr. and Mrs. Lites, Jim Lites, Scott Lites,
Steve Lites, Lori Lites and Dolores Tummonds.
Roger MacLeod, developer of Holland's first condominium project
27 years ago, is the project manager and developer.
Clarence Felt, of K.C. Felt Construction is construction manager.
Felt said developers plan to use local contractors as much as
possible. In each construction category the group has three or
four sub-contractors it has worked with and intends to send bid
packages to as soon as the specifications are completed by Nederveld
and Associates (architects). "We'll only go outside the area
if we have to," he said. If other local contractors are interested
in the project they may contact him at the Cottages office downtown
Pentwater. The project is estimated to generate 385 construction
or supplier jobs.
Along with the homes, the area will include public green spaces,
a clubhouse with outdoor pool, exercise room, putting green and
waterfall.
